Description

The Nautical Institute is looking for a passionate and experienced Senior Technical Adviser to join our London-based Research and Relationships Department. You will be working to develop the NI’s technical impact in support of our key objectives, primarily in the Research and Relationships area. You will also provide technical support across other sections including the Information and Publications area.

Applicants should hold a relevant maritime qualification and preferably a degree. Seagoing experience is necessary at least Chief Mate, as is the ambition to help shape the industry for the future.

This post is based in the London Headquarters with the possibility of some remote working, however permission to work in the UK is a must. Ability to travel internationally without restrictions is preferable.

Requirements

  • Research technical areas of interest to the NI membership and in support of the Strategic Plan
  • Compile technical papers for publishing or industry engagement
  • Assist, in collaboration with the head of section, in developing the portfolio of publications and sourcing technical articles for our website and journals including our flagship magazine Seaways
  • Liaise with a multi-national pool of authors peer reviewers and industry experts
  • Attend technical meetings on behalf of the NI to foster industry engagement
  • Consult with members and other industry representatives to find practical solutions to issues that reflect the values of the NI
  • Help attract funded research projects
  • Support other areas of NI team including qualifications and membership

 The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall objectives of the organisation.

ESSENTIAL:

  • Seatime – to at least Chief Mate
  • Education to degree level
  • Good communication and writing skills, including a high standard of written and spoken English
  • Competency with Microsoft programs – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a diverse working environment
  • Proactive and team player
  • Permission to work in the UK 

PREFERRED:

  • Higher degree
  • Command experience
  • Experience of a range of cargoes and ship types
  • Experience in maritime research projects
  • Other languages
  • Experience of publishing own work
  • Public speaking experience
  • Experience with public consultation
  • Experience of international travel
  • Management experience
